Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), an International Honor Society in Education, was founded in 1911 to foster excellence in education and promote fellowship among those dedicated to teaching. For over a century, the Society has consistently grown, starting with a local chapter to become the international organization it is today, with an initiated membership that exceeds 1.2 million!
KNOWLEDGE . DUTY . POWER .
Kappa Delta Pi is James Madison University's only honors organization in Education. We are also the JMU College of Education's largest organization! The purpose of Kappa Delta Pi is to strive to become a better educator and to surround yourself with fellow preservice educators. We participate in community service events hosted by local schools, attend workshops, and host social events in order to better network with one another.
KDP Project:
Kappa Delta Pi has partnered with the Young Children’s Program located on JMU’s campus for several years. Through this partnership we host a Literacy Night for their students and families. This event involves stations with children’s book favorites, sensory and tactile activities, and opportunities for children to practice learning the alphabet. Children receive a passport as they enter the event and earn a stamp from each station they visit. After they visit all of our stations, we give them a prize for all of their hard work! It is such a joy to work with the YCP and provide an experience for children and their families to learn together!
Family Math Night creates a connection with KDP and local middle schools. This is another event we’ve done for several years. We coordinate a night to set up at a middle school for playing a variety of mathematical games. A few fan favorites are Giant Jenga, Probability Bingo and 24. Students are given passports and earn stickers for the games they play. We also give students raffle tickets for an exciting drawing at the end of the night. Family Math Night provides an enjoyable and educational night for the middle schoolers and their parents!
